Second Semester
Chapter Fifteen
My notion at keeping my death/survival quiet wouldnât last long. The moment Bridget set foot in the class we shared for our final exam, everything was exposed. Sitting in the back of the classroom with my hood up didnât save me. She seemed to sense me immediately, jerking her head to the back so her glare could meet mine instantly.
Her eyes were so wide, I thought theyâd pop right out of her head. Only rage could describe the expression that flashed across her face. Unwilling to back down, I glared back at her, forcing her to understand my resolve. I narrowed my silver eye, causing a shiver to run through her as she shook before finally bolting from the classroom. Needless to say, she missed the final.
Angela kept true to her word. She didnât leave my side while I finished up the semester. And it was incredibly frustrating. She went back to playing the mysterious bystander: always nearby, but never close enough to give answers.
The rules seemed to apply to everyone back at home as well. Harrison, Joseph, and Mitchell all continued their usual habit of keeping away from me. Now that I knew their names, they were extra cautious, never allowing me close enough to hear them speak. While Mitchell and Joseph appeared to want to break the rule occasionally, their eyes were full of sadness, Harrison kept his ground. Again, no one would tell me why.
The living, however, made it their point to talk to me. The moment I stepped out of my car, my mother noticed the change in my left eye right away. âWhat are you wearing now?â
âWhat?â I asked, feigning ignorance.
She narrowed her eyes and pointed. âDonât what me. Why is your eye silver?â
Reaching to touch just beneath my lashes, I chuckled. âOh, that. Itâs just a colored contact.â
Accusing me of lying was far-fetched, considering we were talking about the color of my eyes. So instead, she merely groaned and chose to ignore my new fashion choice. But it continued to be a topic of conversation between the two of us over winter break as she kept trying to convince me to take it out.
âWhy does College seem to bring out the strangest parts of my kids,â she commented over the mug of hot chocolate she was sipping on.
I scoffed. âAll Sam did was do homework and work in the cafeteria. She didnât go through a weird phase.â
âYour sister had a life in college, it just may not have matched your own,â she said, giving me a sly smile that made me question my own memories of my sister.
Suddenly, I was aware of all of the differences between us. We did live completely different lives, and I wondered what her stories consisted of. âFair,â I conceded. âIâll just have to get the stories from her later.â
Mom grinned over her mug. âGood luck.â
Changing the subject, I reached for my keys that sat on the kitchen counter. âMind if I head over to Raeâs house for dinner tonight? I want to see them before I head back to school.
